How are heavy elements made in a supernova?

I know a decent bit about supernovas, but how does the explosion create heavier metal like gold? Wouldn't that prove that alchemy is true to some level, as the iron produced in a super red giants fusion would cause the explosion, as the star cannot fuse iron(FE), so would the iron turn to gold or would the collisions of particles form heavier elements?
