Question about timber columns and slenderness?

I'm not an engineer, nor do I play one on TV, but I have an engineering question. I must support a weight of 1750 pounds with a timber column that is 8.5 feet long, unbraced, with a safety factor of 2.0. Will a plain 4x4 do the job without buckling, or should I use a built-up column?
